The Power of Community: Enabling Improvement

When I first started Adventure Athletes, I thought the biggest factor in progress was individual grit—putting in the hours, grinding through the sessions, and pushing myself harder than anyone else. I always thought the best way to progress was on my own without any distractions. But as time’s gone on, I’ve realised that the real secret to improvement isn’t just about what you can do alone. It’s about who you have beside you. How the people around you inspire you and help you to grow. If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together!

Why Community Matters

It’s easy to get caught up in your own bubble, especially when you’re chasing big goals. I’ve been there—focused on my own plans, ticking off sessions, and barely looking up to see who was around me. But the truth is, the biggest leaps I’ve taken, both in fitness and in life, have come from the people around me.

Take my podcast for example. That's how this whole brand began, and the more I've interviewed people and shared their stories, the more I've been inspired myself to grow the brand and help other people reach their goals. Every guest, every listener, every story shared—it all adds fuel to my fire. Hearing how others have overcome their own challenges reminds me why I started this journey in the first place. It’s easy to forget your ‘why’ when you’re in the thick of training, but community has a way of bringing it back into focus.

Recently, I’ve been running with the Running Punks, a local group that’s become a lifeline for my mental health. There’s something about the Wednesday runs that makes it a non-negotiable for my week. The group of close friends with the same passion for running, the group chats, the post run pub visits. It's great to feel a part of something.

This has extended into the Adventure Athletes. I put a big emphasis on community and support. We have our own group chats, meet ups, we go to events together, we train together. It's something more than just training, its a place to feel welcome!

The Power of Support

I’ve been lucky to have friends who show up for me at events—sometimes to crew, sometimes just to shout encouragement from the sidelines. It’s easy to underestimate how much a simple “you’ve got this” can mean when you’re deep in the pain cave. I’ve also seen first-hand how my PT community lifts each other up. We celebrate wins, troubleshoot setbacks, and push each other to reach new heights. There’s no ego, just a shared commitment to seeing everyone succeed.

Community isn’t just about having people to train with. It’s about accountability, encouragement, and shared purpose. When you’re surrounded by people who believe in you—and who you believe in—you start to see what you’re really capable of. You show up for them, and in the process, you show up for yourself.

Who’s in Your Corner?

Take a moment to think about your own circle. Who do you turn to when training gets tough? Who celebrates your wins, no matter how small? Who challenges you to be better? If you’re struggling to answer those questions, maybe it’s time to find your people.
